Legrand Group expands data center service with acquisition of USystems Ltd

Legrand has strengthened its data centre solutions offering with the acquisition of Bedford-based infrastructure specialist USystems.

Acquiring USystems’ entire portfolio, which includes the world-leading ColdLogik cooling technology, the deal further strengthens Legrand’s position in providing added-value solutions in the growing data centre market. The acquisition will help Legrand expand its presence in the UK data centre market, while also helping to grow USystems’ international business.

USystems’ portfolio of cooling solutions and racks help data centres reduce their overall energy bills, subsequently bringing down their carbon footprint. USystems’ efficient technologies allow customers to reach the IT densities required, combined with unprecedented levels of sustainable cooling efficiency.

The range of retrofit and new build ColdLogik Rear Door Coolers, for example, provides an efficient and sustainable cooling range from 0.1 to 200kW plus per rack. This is particularly impactful in the growing micro data centre (MDC) market, where USystems has developed its ColdLogik technology to occupy less than one square metre of floor space to fit most edge applications.

Pascal Stutz, CEO, Legrand UK & Ireland, said: “The acquisition of USystems enables us to strengthen our position in the fastest growing segments of the data centre sector – HPC (high performance computing) and MDCs; complements our existing offering in the data centre white space market in both the UK and globally; and provides Legrand with additional expertise and capabilities in specialist cooling and energy efficiency technologies. All of which allows us to better serve customers’ needs through value-add, problem solving and an increasingly solutions-based approach to the markets we serve.”

Scott Bailey, MD, USystems Ltd, said: “USystems’ ColdLogik technology is in a prime position to support the data centre industry’s move towards a more sustainable, energy efficient future, as well as to meet HPC’s higher cooling requirements easily. Our EDGE range of micro data centres complements Legrand’s existing portfolio and fits with their philosophy of developing a more integrated, solutions-based approach to helping their customers, as opposed to simple product-based deployments. We are excited to join the Legrand Group and to expand the USystems portfolio internationally.”

How the Soundproof EDGE-3 MDC accomplishes over 12kW of heat removal with just fans

Protecting expensive servers and switches or just general IT equipment is of paramount importance, and by clever design the unique air extraction system provides a staggering 12kW heat removal in Soundproof EDGE-3 MDC.

Incorporating EC fan technology into micro data center solutions means an immediate energy reduction compared to standard AC or DC fans. The EDGE Management System has onboard EC fan control capability thus enabling the fans to ramp up and down in speed in response to the temperature within the enclosure, this means that only the necessary amount of power is used to maintain the ideal operating temperature.

The Key Difference for 12kW Heat Removal: Zones

The key difference between most 19” soundproof cabinets is the poor segregation between cold air entering into the cabinet and the IT equipment space – failure to deal with this results in hot spots, heat recirculation issues and an inability of heat removal.

The EDGE-3 Soundproof MDC deals with heat removal by creating three separate zones. The first zone is the ‘patent pending’ double pass wardrobe front doors; ambient air passes through the full height of the doors and into the second zone.

This feature is of key importance as this allows a uniform flow of ambient cool air to be available at any ‘U’ positions within the cabinet – so no equipment needs be starved of cool air. It is worth noting that this vertical space should be kept clear and that all cabling should be kept managed against the infill panels, using jumper rings, finger management or cable trunking.

The second zone is the IT equipment space, and sealing between the first and second zone is critical. The EDGE-3 comes as standard with foam infills which cover the periphery of the 19” area.

Cabling can pass through this area from front to rear, but maintaining the seals integrity is very important. In addition to the peripheral area, the 19” aperture also needs to be treated in the same way – completely sealed. Unfortunately, not all equipment comes in the standard 19” format, for this reason we have a number of solutions designed to assist in this process.

The air inlet wardrobe doors enable the required volume of air to uniformly flow over the full height of the ‘U’ space on both sides of the cabinet, thus ensuring that all the enclosed IT equipment receive the necessary amount of air.

The hot air exits via the active temperature-controlled doors, which is in effect the third zone. Once again, it’s imperative that the air exhaust is kept clear of obstruction from cabling, PDU’s, etc.

Heat Load Testing

During original heat load testing, USystems engineers demonstrated how critical it is to maintain the seal integrity between the first zone (i.e. air intake doors, 19” facia) and the second zone (i.e. the IT equipment area). They removed just one small foam black from the bottom corner of the cabinet and the data from the temperature revealed an immediate heat gain of 15°C/59°F in the localised area, which meant the air on temperature to the IT equipment increased to 37°C/99°F and alarmingly the whole front zone increased by 5°C/41°F.

Conclusion

The EDGE-3 Soundproof MDC can effectively deal with up to 12kW server heat removal via its two centrifugal fans in the rear doors – to ensure maximum energy efficiency, they are fitted with variable fan speed controls and temperature sensors.

Liquid Cooling in Data Centers, why is it needed?

Modern chips and processors are smaller than ever and are at the point that the manufacturing process has exhausted Moore’s Law.

These modern chips and processors are compacted so tight it creates a significant heat load, which then means we need more efficient and sustainable cooling solutions, e.g., they need to absorb heat more efficiently than standard air cooling. This has led the Data Center industry to investigate Liquid Cooling in more depth.

What is Liquid Cooling?

In theory it is a simple cooling methodology, using liquid as the primary means for capturing and expelling heat created by IT load.

Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions about the different technologies available, with a large portion of our industry believing there are only two types of Liquid Cooling:

  1. Immersion Cooling

IT equipment is submerged inside an electrically non-conductive liquid inside a tub that absorbs heat.

  1. Direct Chip Liquid Cooling (DCLC)

Small hoses bring cool water to heat sinks or cold plates and  circulate warmed water to a heat exchanger.

Even though both technologies have merit, there are considerable downfalls. With immersion cooling there is significant setup costs, it does not capture 100% of the heat generated, which would mean you would require a secondary, supplementary cooling source, and this is the same with Direct Chip Level Cooling, which only captures between 60-80% of the heat.

So, is there an alternative technology?

Yes, there is…… Rear Door Heat Exchangers (RDHx), or known also as Rear Door Coolers (RDC), is a proven liquid cooling technology, sometimes known as Air Assisted Liquid Cooling, which is designed to operate as a closed loop system.

In principle there are two main types of Rear Door Cooling methods, passive and active.

First, with a passive Rear Door Cooler (RDC), works by allowing ambient air to be pulled into the rack via the IT equipment fans with the resulting hardware hot exhaust air expelled over a heat exchanger, transferring the heat into the liquid inside the coil, with the resulting chilled air being expelled back into the room.

Similarly, with an ProActive Rear Door Cooler (RDC), ambient air is pulled into the rack by the IT equipment fans, however the resulting hot exhaust air is assisted by EC fans mounted within the proactive door and the air expelled over a heat exchanger, transferring the heat into the liquid inside the coil, with the resulting chilled air being expelled back into the room at, or just below, the predetermined room ambient temperature.

In this way the ProActive Rear Door Cooler can control the whole room temperature environment, without supplementary cooling technology.

In summary,

When the whole data center is taken into account, all liquid cooling solutions require air to assist in the data center cooling process, the ColdLogik solution integrates this as standard without the need for supplementary cooling equipment.

There are many misleading industry articles, hopefully this document sets the record straight.
